First Lady Jill Biden has urged President Joe Biden to help decrease civilian casualties in the Israel-Hamas war, according to the account of a White House event attendee to The New York Times.

The president reportedly disclosed at a Ramadan dinner with Muslim community members that his wife had demanded he curb the violence.

Joe Biden’s purported admission came two days before he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the war’s impact on Gaza.

The president told Netanyahu Thursday he would define his policy toward the city based off how Israel implemented "specific,” “concrete” and “measurable” steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering and aid workers’ safety.

Israel hit the vehicles of humanitarian aid workers in a missile strike on Monday, killing seven World Central Kitchen members. Joe Biden told the prime minister the incident was unacceptable, echoing his Tuesday remarks on it and the overall humanitarian struggles in Gaza.

“Even more tragically, this is not a stand-alone incident. This conflict has been one of the worst in recent memory in terms of how many aid workers have been killed,” the president said following the strike. “This is a major reason why distributing humanitarian aid in Gaza has been so difficult – because Israel has not done enough to protect aid workers trying to deliver desperately needed help to civilians."

Joe Biden also urged Netanyahu to let his negotiators reach a deal with Hamas to secure hostages’ release, adding a ceasefire was essential in improving Gaza’s humanitarian issues.

The president has shifted his attitude toward a ceasefire in recent months amid pressure from the left wing of his party and Muslim voters. He expressed hope in February a deal would materialize within a week. The Biden administration is still arranging a deal.

The White House did not immediately return The National Desk's request for comment.
