BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The University at Buffalo (UB) says a woman who was killed in a Monroe County crash earlier this month was a student at the school.

It happened on June 2. Maria Eichas was 18 years old when her vehicle was struck by another driver on Burritt Road in Parma. She was pronounced dead at the scene, our Rochester sister station WROC reports.

The Spencerport High School graduate was a student in UB’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. UB says she was studying within the school’s Industrial and Systems Engineering Department.

“The university community is very sad to learn of the tragic death of UB undergraduate student Maria Eichas, who died in a motor vehicle accident on Sunday, June 2, in Parma, N.Y. We have reached out to Maria’s family to provide whatever support we can during this very difficult time. On behalf of the entire UB community, we extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Maria’s family, friends and fellow students.”

Eichas’ funeral service was held Monday in Rochester and grief counseling has been made available to faculty, staff and students.

The driver charged with killing Eichas, 33-year-old Alexander Hackett, has been accused of second-degree vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated, according to WROC.
