Meta rolls out new plan to attract Gen Z users to Facebook, compete with popular apps

This year Facebook turned 20, but over the last several years, the social media giant has fallen to the wayside of other apps like Instagram and TikTok. Social media company, Meta, has launched a new plan to attract younger Gen Z users to Facebook, aiming to compete with popular apps like Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat for younger users. The company is focusing on engaging video content, which Esther Rabinowich, a 19-year-old college student living in Florida, says many of her friends use social media like Instagram for their daily viewing of people's lives. The new strategy is aimed at attracting teenage users, focusing on reels, feeds, and creators. Rajiv Garg, a Professor at the Emory University Business School, believes this strategy could help Meta generate users. However, a Facebook representative acknowledged progress in Gen Z numbers but noted that it was only minor.

This year Facebook turned 20, but over the last several years, the social media giant has fallen to the wayside of other apps like Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat; specifically when it comes to younger users.

For this reason, Meta is rolling out a new plan to try to attract a larger Gen Z audience.

"Facebook is not all that interesting for us," said Esther Rabinowich, a 19-year-old college student living in Florida.

Rabinowich said she and her friends use social media all the time. Especially what they call "the big three."

She says many people her age seek more entertaining video content like reels and shorts. Something Facebook isn't primarily known for.

"For all those like viewings of people's lives, we go to Instagram," Rabinowich said.

Meta is trying to change that by releasing a new plan aimed at attracting teenage users. Their focus is on reels, feeds and creators.

"People will come to reels," said Rajiv Garg, a Professor at the Emory University Business School.

Garg said incorporating more reels should help Meta generate users.

Right now, Rabinowich said many of her friends view Facebook as just a place to network and find job opportunities.

According to Axios, a Facebook representative did say that its Gen Z numbers are beginning to make some progress but it's only minor.
