Apple announced a round of major artificial intelligence (AI) upgrades to its devices Monday, sparking privacy concerns among the tech community.

The announcement came during the first day of the company’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in California, an annual showcase of new softwares and technologies. During a keynote on Apple's latest features, the company announced “Apple Intelligence,” which will integrate AI tools like ChatGPT across its devices.

The AI will get to know a user personally and utilize the technology to mitigate scheduling conflicts, remember details from text messages and know the names of individuals in photos, according to Apple. While the new tech is set to come with a variety of privacy safeguards, some expressed concerns with the features this week.

Technology entrepreneur and X owner Elon Musk alleged the AI integrations could violate a user’s privacy.

Former Trump administration State Department official Mike Benz described the integration as creating a "Woke Death Star AI."

"Apple merging together with Microsoft’s ChatGPT today on a Woke Death Star AI is basically like Coke + Pepsi merging to create an inescapable death drink," he said.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak also shared his own apprehensions about the new features in an appearance on Bloomberg.

"I have AI myself," he added. "Actual intelligence."

The keynote also addressed a number of software upgrades across Apple devices. VisionOS 2, which blends virtual reality and augmented reality for the new Apple Vision Pro headset, will now allow access to photos via the headset, letting users view life-sized images taken on a connected smart device.

Apple is also releasing iOS 18, which includes a round of upgrades for its smart phones. iPhones will now allow users to customize the appearance of apps and widgets, and new privacy tools will require facial recognition to unlock certain apps containing sensitive information.

Additionally, iPads will receive a major boost to their calculator app, known as Math Notes. The feature will assist users writing math equations with an Apple Pencil by inputting solutions whenever a user draws an equal sign in real time. The feature can accommodate advanced algebra and trigonometry equations.

The National Desk (TND) reached out to Apple for comment. This story will be updated if a response is received.
