Weight loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro are growing in popularity, as are their price tags.

Without insurance or a prescription, some weight loss drugs could cost hundreds of dollars every month. For that reason, some people are looking into cheaper options.

However, experts say you need to do your research. C. Michael White, a professor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Connecticut said one alternative option comes from compounding pharmacies who are not allowed to create a drug like a drug manufacturer.

We're told people are also searching for semaglutide or tirzepatide peptides, which are two ingredients found in weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro.

"It will bring you to some different sites and it will allow you to be able to buy these vials that have the powdered active ingredient in it," said White.

Professor Emeritus at The University of Calgary Dr. David Lau said while these options may be cheaper, they aren't safe for several reasons.

If you're looking for medication, Lau said Qsymia and Contrave have both been approved for weight management and are available in the United States.

"These are all medications that work on appetite. Some are more effective than others," said Lau.
