New video shows Nancy Pelosi 'taking responsibility' for breakdown of security on Jan. 6

Newly released, never-before-seen footage from Jan. 6 appears to give more context on the security breakdown that enabled the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Newly released footage from Jan. 6 shows then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi evacuating the Capitol, blaming herself for not having the National Guard on hand. The footage was shot by Pelosi's daughter, Alexandra Pelosi, for an HBO documentary. The House Republicans claim this contradicts Democrats' claim that Donald Trump bears sole responsibility for the time it took to deploy the Guard. However, the Army and Air Force, which report directly to the president, do not represent Pelosi. After the video was released, Pelosi called the release a Republican attempt to rewrite history. Capitol Police Chief Steve Sund stood by his claims that superiors in Congress and the Pentagon rebuffed his requests for National Guard help before and during the riot.

Newly released, never-before-seen footage from Jan. 6 appears to give more context on the security breakdown that enabled the attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The video published by the House Republicans shows then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi evacuating the Capitol. In the footage Pelosi is talking to her chief of staff, blaming herself for not having the National Guard on hand.

The video was shot by Pelosi’s daughter, Alexandra Pelosi, for an HBO documentary.

VOTE | Do you think former House Speaker Pelosi deserves some of the blame for Jan. 6 riot?

After the video release, Pelosi went on MSNBC calling the release a Republican attempt to rewrite history.

"The former president of the United States and his toadies do not want to face the facts... They’re trying to do revisionist history on January 6," Pelosi said.

Republicans argue this upends Democrats' claims that Donald Trump bears sole responsibility for the time it took to deploy the National Guard. However, the National Guard is under the Army and Air Force, which report directly to the president, not the house speaker.

The speaker does have authority over Capitol Police.

In an interview with WJLA just days after Jan. 6, Capitol Police Chief Steve Sund, who stepped down after Pelosi called for his resignation, stood by his claims that superiors in Congress and the Pentagon rebuffed his requests for National Guard help before and during the riot.

"Quote, ‘I don’t like the optics of the National Guard standing line with the Capitol in the background. I was perplexed, I felt like am I really hearing what I think I’m hearing?” said Sund.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump is calling for the members of the Jan. 6 Select Committee to be indicted. Trump alleges the committee deliberately withheld information. So far there’s no strong evidence backing up the former president’s claims.
